Naming digital music tracks
Q I recently purchased a portable music player so I could listen to music on a long flight. Using Windows Media Player I copied a CD, and on my computer the name of each song appeared correctly, with the name of the artist. I copied the tracks to the player and it worked fine. But when I tried to copy subsequent CDs, no song titles appeared, just track numbers, and with Unknown Artist instead of the artist’s name. Once the CDs were all copied to the computer, I went in, gave the folder a name and typed in the name of each song instead of the track number. But on the music player, the only information showing on the player’s screen for each of the tracks is the track number and Unknown Artist. Although the player is usable, it’s down to pot luck which tune I get to hear. It would be nice to be able to make a selection – can you help?

A Your music player uses information stored within the MP3 files – called tags – to figure out what a song is, who it’s by and what style of music it is. It sounds like you changed the names of the files, which will show up fine on the computer, but the file names don’t mean anything to the music player. Don’t worry, though, it’s easy to edit the tags.

Incidentally, when you copy a music CD, Windows Media Player uses your internet connection to figure out what it is and automatically fill in the details, as happened with your first CD.

Perhaps your connection was not working when you copied the other CDs, which is why it couldn’t fill in the information itself. In that case, when you copy CDs in future, make sure the internet connection is up and running.

To edit the tags of the music you’ve already copied, open Windows Media Player and click on the Library tab. Click the Album entry on the left, and you’ll see a list of albums, some of which will be listed as Unknown Artist, with a date.

If your internet connection is working, right-click one and select Update Album Info – it will go away and try to find the information itself. If that doesn’t work, double-click each album’s icon.

To edit the album title, right-click the first entry next to the CD icon (it will say something like ‘Untitled - 09-10-07’) and click Edit, then type the new entry. Do the same for the next line, which is where the artist’s name goes.

To change the track names, click one of them (where it says Track 1, say), then wait a second or so and click again. A cursor will appear, and you can change the name. Repeat the process for all the tracks. Finally, you’ll need to copy the tracks over to your music player again.
