[XP] Compaq/HP: BSOD after upgrade to SP3 |

There is an issue with AMD equipped (Intel machines seem to be okay) Compaq/HP machines after an upgrade to Service pack 3 for Windows XP. A BSOD (Blue Screen Of Death) is encountered, typically with the following error message:
A problem has been detected and widows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer... | | Technical information: | | *** STOP: 0x0000007E (0x00000005, 0xFC5CCAF3, 0xFC90F8C0, 0xFC90F5C0) | SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED |
The solution (as provided by HP)(1) Restart computer using the [F8] key to reach the safe mode menu
(2) Choose safe mode
(3) Browse to C:\Windows\System32\Drivers
(4) Rename to "interppm.sys" to "oldintelppm.sys"
(5) Restart fin |
